How It Works
LED arrangements
01
How does LED lighting work to bring out the beauty of Kumiko and our acrylic sheets?
There are two effects to consider – lighting the object and lighting the room. Firstly, the appearance of the latticework itself is transformed when it is illuminated, creating a silhouette of contrast between washi paper and the ornate wood patterning. Further, Kumiko woodsetting is an artform that beautifies the functions of lighting and ventilation. Applying washi controls airflow and transforms the way light is cast into the space. This is the second effect: what is technically known as the diffusion filter effect. Rather than the simple shadows of the lattice being projected onto the room surfaces, light from the source is scattered in all directions as it passes through the washi to illuminate the room.

How to incorporate LED lights into Kumiko
The design of the frame informs the power of the LED strips and their positioning behind the Kumiko panel. Careful consideration is needed to achieve the goal of having even luminance across the light-emitting surface with minimal glare. Beyond that, to power and dim the LED strips is simply a matter of selecting an appropriate DC power supply and dimming method. Things to consider are the electrical infrastructure in the installation space (switches, faceplates, wiring etc.) and which dimming method will be most compatible.

Selectable types of lighting
Even if you’ve never really thought about it, you have a preferred colour temperature (simply thought of as the warmth/coolness of white light). There may be an argument to be had about how the colour of hinoki wood will be reproduced under varying colour temperatures, but let’s not argue – you like what you like, and you can select from the range of 2300K (extra warm white), 2700K, 3000K and 4000K (cool white).
