Here at Nagomi Design, we bring together independent Kumiko artisans to deliver their combined craftsmanship to Australia and the world.

Kumiko Master / Director
Eijiro Fukuda (EJ)
EJ is based in Melbourne. His goal is to bring Japanese interior design to the world. EJ’s designer works harmonise Kumiko, Japanese washi paper panels and LED lighting.

Takahiro Tanaka (Taka)
Taka is the heir to a family of traditional Edo Kumiko craftsmanship. He insists on continuing to use time-honoured hand tools in his works, to produce furniture that respects traditional techniques but responds to modern design.

Ms Ai Otani (Jennifer)
Jennifer’s patience and concentration allow her to perform the fine manual craftsmanship needed to produce intricate Kumiko works. The more complicated the design, the more her attention to detail comes to the fore.
Interior Designer
Kiki Banba
After completing tertiary studies in Japan, Kiki acquired an Advanced Diploma in Interior Design at the Canberra Institute of Technology and a Masters of Architecture at RMIT. She is engaged in all sorts of projects across Melbourne, both commercial and residential. Kiki uses her broad knowledge of Australian architecture and her rich sensibility to achieve simple yet exquisite designs that make perfect use of Kumiko and other elements of Japanese style.

Jake Russell
Jake brings out the beauty of wood as a furniture designer and manufacturer. His Odyssey line of furniture is attractive and functional. Jake incorporates Kumiko into items such as cabinet doors.

Shunsuke Otani (Shone)
A leading light of Osaka Kumiko, Shone crafts beautiful works embodying advanced technical skill and design. His Kumiko has received great acclaim for its artistic value. Shone’s use of curved lines in his works is especially magical.

Sho Takakusaki (Sho)
Sho is a master of fine detail, particularly when it comes to screens and other standing works. He wields the plane to perfection to bring out the brightness of the wood, culminating in exquisite screens combining Kumiko and shoji.
Wood Master
David Cross
David is a wood expert, with vast experience repairing and producing antique wooden wares. While teaching woodcrafting techniques from Melbourne’s DC Studio, he is also a collector of Japanese hand tools.
Lighting Master / LED designer
Simon Pitt
Simon has a great understanding of the angles, devices and brightness adjustments needed to bring out the best in Kumiko. Our artisans love the way he brings life to the materials.
