Kumiko Woodworking

What is Kumiko art?

Dating back to the 8th century, Kumiko is a delicate and sophisticated technique of assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails. Thinly slit wooden pieces are grooved, punched and mortised, and then fitted individually using a plane, saw, chisel and other tools to make fine adjustments.

Each pattern has its own meaning, and people in Japan have long loved Kumiko as a reminder of important things such as good health and good relationships. Shoji screens featuring Kumiko patterns are a particularly beautiful item that architects around the world are paying renewed attention to in designing luxurious living and working spaces.

Kumiko art
by Nagomi Design

Our craftspeople in Japan bring their intuition and experience to create beautiful panels combining traditional Kumiko and shoji screens. By pursuing the beauty of wood, the interplay of light and shadow, and the spatial beauty that enhances the luxury of the room, our artisans give traditional Japanese interior design techniques a modern interpretation. While a single Kumiko creation requires time and many processes, the finished product is a piece of wooden art that continues to fascinate people all over the world.
Kumiko panels can be used to give a unique accent to all aspects of residential and commercial interior design – from ceiling lighting, cabinet doors, and shoji screens, through to tables and other furniture, decorative walls, and partitions. Nagomi Design strives to continually offer new products using Kumiko.
